The Story of Tanglewood, Houston’s Timeless Neighborhood
The story of Tanglewood began in the late 1940s, during a period of rapid expansion for Houston. Oil wealth and new industries were drawing families to the city in record numbers, and developers began looking westward for opportunities to create upscale suburban communities.
The neighborhood was the vision of William G. Farrington, a prominent Houston developer and founder of the Farrington Company. In 1949, Farrington purchased more than 750 acres of rural land located along what was then called San Felipe Road (now San Felipe St.). His goal was to build a residential neighborhood that combined city convenience with a sense of quiet, natural beauty.
Farrington named the development Tanglewood, inspired by Tanglewood Tales, a collection of children’s stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne that he often read to his young daughter. The literary connection gave the neighborhood a distinctive and personal identity that has endured for generations.
Design and Character
From the beginning, Tanglewood was designed with careful attention to aesthetics and livability. Farrington’s vision included spacious lots, curving streets and extensive green space to create a relaxed and gracious environment. Each new homeowner received two oak trees as part of the purchase, a tradition that helped establish the towering tree canopy that defines the neighborhood today.
The first homes were completed in the early 1950s, built primarily in ranch and mid-century styles that reflected the architectural trends of the time. These single-story homes featured broad lawns and open layouts ideal for family life. Over the decades, many of the original houses have been replaced by larger, custom-built residences, but the neighborhood’s park-like setting and sense of prestige remain intact.
Growth and Transformation
As Houston continued to expand through the 1960s and 1970s, Tanglewood’s location became even more desirable. Its proximity to what would become the Galleria area and Uptown business district positioned it as a prime address for professionals, executives and families seeking both convenience and privacy.
During this period, the neighborhood saw a transformation in architectural style. Traditional ranch homes gave way to grand two-story estates in Georgian, French and Mediterranean designs. Despite the changes, the Tanglewood Homes Association, established early in the neighborhood’s history, ensured that the area retained its cohesive and elegant appearance.
Community and Legacy
The Tanglewood Homes Association remains one of the oldest continuously operating civic organizations in Houston. It plays a central role in preserving the beauty, safety and sense of community that residents value. From enforcing deed restrictions to maintaining common spaces, the association’s work has helped Tanglewood maintain its reputation for excellence and stability for more than seventy years.
Over the decades, Tanglewood has been home to some of Houston’s most notable citizens, including business leaders, philanthropists, and even former President George H. W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush, who lived there for several years before moving to the Post Oak area.
Tanglewood Today
Today, Tanglewood continues to embody the spirit of refined Houston living. The neighborhood’s wide boulevards and mature oaks remain a hallmark of its charm. Residents enjoy close proximity to the Galleria, Memorial Park, fine dining and cultural landmarks, all while feeling a sense of timeless community that connects the past to the present.
What began as a visionary suburban development in postwar Houston has grown into one of the city’s most respected and sought-after neighborhoods. Tanglewood stands as a testament to thoughtful planning, natural beauty and a shared commitment to preserving what makes this community so special.
